It’s one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is, it depends on what it’s made of. Here’s the full rundown so you know before you load up the truck. ## The short version Most appliances are priced and paid out as tin, so before you head over, check our [current tin pricing](https://redwoodrecycling.com/scrap-metal-prices-salt-lake-city/#tin) to know roughly what you’ll walk away with. For the full picture of everything we take beyond appliances, our [What We Accept page](https://redwoodrecycling.com/what-metals-can-i-recycle/) is your checklist, and our [FAQ page](https://redwoodrecycling.com/scrap-metal-recycling-faq/) covers most of the “do I need to do anything first” questions. ## Large appliances we accept These are all welcome as they are, no need to disassemble them first: - Washers - Dryers - Dishwashers - Stoves - Ranges (gas or electric) - Ovens - Range hoods - Pizza ovens - Garbage disposals All of these are typically paid out at our tin rate. Bring them in as a full unit and we’ll take it from there. ## the exception: Fridges and freezers Refrigerators and freezers are the big exception on this list, and it comes down to one thing: Freon. Freon has to be properly removed before a fridge or freezer can be recycled as scrap metal, and that’s not something we’re set up to do here. The good news is you don’t have to figure out disposal on your own. [Wasatch Metal](https://wasatchmetal.com/) removes the Freon and accepts fridges and freezers for a $20 fee. Bring it to them and you’re done. ## Small kitchen appliances we accept If it’s metal, we probably want it. This includes: - Toasters - Coffee makers - Ice cream makers - Steamers - Air fryers - Mixers - Meat slicers - Microwaves - Pots and pans - Bakeware - Cutlery Same as above, these come in as tin, so check the [tin price](https://redwoodrecycling.com/scrap-metal-prices-salt-lake-city/#tin) before you come in. ## What we don’t accept **Plastic.** We pay for metal, not plastic, so appliances that are mostly plastic housing with only small metal components inside aren’t a good fit here. That’s the reason vacuums are a no. Most vacuums are built almost entirely from plastic, with only small motor components in metal, so there isn’t enough recoverable metal to make it worth it to us, so we do not accept them. If you’re ever unsure whether something is metal enough to bring in, give us a call before you make the drive. We’d rather answer a quick question over the phone than have you show up with something we can’t take. ## Quick reference checklist | Appliance | **Accepted**? | **Notes** | |---|---|---| | Washers | Yes | Priced as tin | | Dryers | Yes | Priced as tin | | Dishwashers | Yes | Priced as tin | | Stoves / Ranges | Yes | Priced as tin | | Ovens | Yes | Priced as tin | | Range hoods | Yes | Priced as tin | | Pizza ovens | Yes | Priced as tin | | Garbage disposals | Yes | Priced as tin | | Toasters, coffee makers, mixers, air fryers, etc. | Yes | Priced as tin | | Pots, pans, bakeware, cutlery | Yes | Priced as tin | | Microwaves | Yes | Priced as tin | | Refrigerators | No | Take to [Wasatch Metal](https://wasatchmetal.com/), $20 fee, they remove the Freon | | Freezers | No | Take to [Wasatch Metal](https://wasatchmetal.com/), $20 fee, they remove the Freon | | Vacuums | No | Mostly plastic, not enough recoverable metal | ## Ready to bring in your appliances? You can bring us an old water heater, and yes, you get paid for it. There is no drop-off fee, and you do not need an appointment. Just load it up and drive in. Water heaters are one of the most common items people ask us about on our **[accepted materials list](https://redwoodrecycling.com/what-we-accept/)**, which makes sense. Every one of them fails eventually, most people replace them under some amount of duress, and the old one ends up sitting in the garage for a year because nobody knows what to do with it. ## What is it actually worth? Let us be straight with you, because we would rather you know before you drive over than feel let down at the scale. A water heater is graded as tin, our category for light steel and appliance metal. Tin is priced per net ton, which is 2,000 pounds. A standard 40 gallon residential unit weighs somewhere around 0.06 to 0.075 tons empty. An 80 gallon can run 0.10 tons or more. So you are looking at a few dollars. Prices move with the market, so call if you want today’s rate, or read **[how our pricing works](https://redwoodrecycling.com/prices/)**. We tell you that up front because the money is not really the reason to bring it to us. ## The real value: you are not paying to get rid of it Look at your other options for that heater sitting in the garage. Take it to the landfill and you pay a dump fee. Hire a junk removal service and you pay a lot more than that. Leave it where it is and it takes up space for another year, which is what most people end up doing. Bring it to us and none of that happens. No fee, no charge, no hassle. You leave with a few bucks in your pocket instead of a lighter wallet. The swing between paying to dump it and getting paid to recycle it is the whole point. ## It also stays out of the landfill A water heater is almost entirely steel, and steel can be melted down and made into new steel over and over without losing quality. There is no reason for 130 pounds of perfectly good metal to get buried in the ground when it costs you nothing to recycle it instead. ## Do I need to take it apart? No. Bring it exactly as it came out of the house. You do not need to remove the fittings, cut anything off, pull the elements, or strip the wiring. The insulation, the plastic drain valve, the outer shell, all of it is fine. We process the whole unit. People overthink this constantly and it costs them a Saturday for no reason. Gas or electric does not matter either. Both are accepted, both are graded the same. ## Do I need to drain it? Yes. This is the one thing we ask. A full 40 gallon tank holds roughly 330 pounds of water, and water is not scrap weight. Hook a garden hose to the drain valve at the bottom, run it out to the driveway, open the valve, and walk away for a while. ## Bring your ID Utah law requires scrap yards to record every transaction, so bring a valid photo ID. Every time, no exceptions, even for a single water heater. If this is your first trip to a scrap yard, it is a lot less intimidating than you would guess. Load it up and come see us. ![author avatar](https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/60f4016f3489e62ccf8a3a4615f9ba4bf1209a959c5a2f2f214a9ad089923529?s=300&d=mm&r=g) redwood [See Full Bio](https://redwoodrecycling.com/author/admin/) **Categories:** Scrap Metal Questions --- ## Pages ### [Home](https://redwoodrecycling.com/) **Published:** June 1, 2026 **Author:** redwood **Content:** # WE BUY SCRAP METAL GET PAID TODAY Family-owned and serving Salt Lake City and Taylorsville since 1984, we pay cash on the spot for aluminum, copper, steel, brass, and dozens of other metals. If it’s metal and you’re not sure what it is or what it’s worth, bring it in; our buyers will identify it and tell you exactly what you’ll get for it. HOW PRICES ARE DETERMINED What your load is worth comes down to three things: the type of metal, the grade, and how clean it is. Copper is graded from Bright & Shiny (highest) down to insulated wire depending on purity and coatings. Aluminum pays differently depending on whether it’s cans, extrusion, clip, or cast. Mixed or contaminated loads, which are metals with attached plastic, rubber, or steel, are graded down. The cleanest, sorted loads always pay the most. Not sure how to sort or prep? Our staff will walk you through it when you arrive. --- ### [Utility Meter Recycling Utah | Water, Gas & Electric](https://redwoodrecycling.com/utility-meter-recycling-utah-water-gas-electric/) **Published:** June 29, 2026 **Author:** redwood **Content:** [Home](https://redwoodrecycling.com/ "Home")» Utility Meter Recycling Utah \| Water, Gas & Electric UTILITY METER RECYCLING Water, gas, and electric meters. The same can come back again and again. 60 DAYS A used can can be recycled and back on the shelf as a new can in as little as 60 days. 500 YEARS Tossed in a landfill instead, that same can would sit there for around 500 years. Recycling is the easy choice. Facts sourced from the [Recycled Materials Association (Lifecycle of a Can)](https://www.recycledmaterials.org/campaign/lifecycle-of-a-can/) and [Think Cans / Novelis](https://thinkcans.net/aluminium/10-aluminium-facts). ## FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I need to crush my aluminum cans? It’s not required, but it helps you. We buy cans by the pound, so crushing them just lets you fit more in the same space for transport. Crushed or not, the weight is the same. Do you take aluminum cans and food cans? Yes to both. Aluminum beverage cans (soda, beer, energy drinks) and steel food cans (soup, vegetables, pet food) are all accepted.
